New Members

Membership of White Oak

Members of White Oak are members of the Insitute of Aikido and of Reading YMCA - details of membership from the  White Oak administrator . White Oak training sessions take place on Sundays at the YMCA parkside road and cost £3.75 per session. White Oak members may also train at RUSU sessions at the 'non-student rate' listed below. (see training times)

New members are welcome to come for a taster session and to watch as many sessions as they like. Once they decide they wish to try aikido, we ask them to join the foundations scheme which provides them with a structured introduction to aikido within the normal class setting. More details about the foundations scheme are available from the  White Oak administrator

There are three kinds of members of the White Oak dojo:
- Soto Deshi. Students who choose to make a serious commitment to their training. In return, they benefit from extra courses, additional training subsidies etc. (The soto deshi scheme is also open to members of the RUSU aikido club).
- Members  Students who are unable to make a major commitment to training and prefer just to train when they are able to.
- Visitors Students whose primary commitment is to a different dojo

Membership of RUSU Aikido club

This is open to staff and students and employees of Reading University. Most people join in October during freshers week at the beginning of the Autumn term but new members are welcome at any time (both complete beginners and experienced aikidoka) - for further information.

Gradings and other infomation

Gradings occur at roughly three monthly intervals and if you average 2 training sessions a week then you should be ready for your first grading after about 3 months. Of course this depends on the individual. The emphasis is on learning and enjoying rather than concentrating on grades!

All you require to begin is loose comfortable clothing (a tracksuit and Tshirt is ideal). No shoes are worn and all jewellery must be removed for safety. Nothing else is required except the curiosity to try and see if you like it!
